Just 45 Mins Away From Udupi Lies A Group Of Islands With Unique Rock Formations & Beachside Bliss
Situated off the coast of Karnataka’s Udupi lies a hidden gem of a group of islands leading to awe-inspiring wonders. There are unique geological formations, crystal-clear waters, and lush greenery all around. Known as St. Mary’s Island, this unparalleled beauty captivates the hearts of travellers and nature enthusiasts alike.
St. Mary’s Island: A Natural Wonder in Udupi
One of the most captivating aspects of St. Mary’s Island is its geological history. The islands are primarily composed of basaltic rock formations. This could be the result of volcanic activity that took place over millions of years. These hexagonal-shaped rock columns, often likened to giant stepping stones, are a rare sight in India. These stunning rock columns resemble a honeycomb pattern and create a surreal and otherworldly atmosphere on the island.
The islands are surrounded by pristine white sandy beaches. Here, visitors can bask in the warm sun, take leisurely strolls, or simply relax by the azure waters of the Arabian Sea. Moreover, the contrast between the dark basaltic rocks and the soft, powdery sand creates a visual spectacle.
Beyond its natural beauty, St. Mary’s Island also boasts a rich historical legacy. According to popular belief, it was on these very islands that the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama first set foot in India in the late 15th century. So, this historical connection adds a layer of intrigue and allure to the islands.
Beachside Paradise
The crystal-clear waters are home to a vibrant underwater world. While the geological formations and beaches are the primary attractions of St. Mary’s Island, the islands are also home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. Visitors to the islands can spot a variety of birds, including seagulls, kingfishers, and herons. The island’s well-maintained pathways and trails provide opportunities for leisurely strolls and exploration, allowing visitors to get up close to the remarkable rock formations.
To reach St. Mary’s Island, one must take a boat ride from the mainland of Udupi. The boat journey itself is an adventure, as it provides panoramic views of the coastline and the open sea. Upon reaching the islands, visitors are free to explore and marvel at the natural wonders that abound.
