Retired Russian colonel Konstantin Sivkov, who is deputy president of the Russian Academy of Missile and Artillery Sciences, floated the idea of detonating a nuclear weapon at the North Pole “if necessary” as a way to get a message across to the West, in a statement on Russian state television.
In his speech , Sivkov called for the potential deployment of nuclear weapons and the demonstration of their presence at the North Pole as a demonstration under certain circumstances.
“If the situation escalates to a very critical stage, we might consider detonating, say, at the North Pole,” he said.
“Similar to what we did with the 58 megaton [thermonuclear bomb] on Novaya Zemlya, where the tests went according to plan, proving their effectiveness and sending a powerful educational message.”
Sivkov emphasized his desire for Russia to prioritize “intensive mass development of strategic nuclear weapons”, arguing that such weapons would provide protection “against any possible encroachment” on the Russian Federation.
He also advocated that Russia adopt “unconventional forms of use of nuclear weapons”, in particular, referring to “powerful nuclear weapons capable of causing serious geophysical consequences, such as explosions of supervolcanoes.”
“Therefore, the deployment of these nuclear weapons is, of course, necessary,” Sivkov raged.
“This is a key issue… I strongly believe that a shift to heavy deployment is strategically necessary.”
Russian officials have repeatedly made nuclear threats to Ukraine and the rest of the world. Medvedev, the former president and deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, has repeatedly threatened to use nuclear weapons against Ukraine.
