Vladimir Putin could face a revolt within his own country if he were to launch an attack on the United States or the United Kingdom.
This week saw a fresh escalation in tensions, with Washington and London authorizing Ukraine to use their long-range missiles on Russian territory. Meanwhile, Moscow fired a medium-range intercontinental ballistic missile for the first time.
While praising the capabilities of this new missile, the Russian president threatened Western nations, warning that these weapons could be deployed against them. The missile in question was reportedly used to strike the city of Dnipro earlier this week.
Nicholas Drummond, security analyst, told The Daily Express : “If he is seen to be doing something reckless, the kingmakers among the oligarchs could rise against him. There could be civil war in Russia.”
Experts also suggest that China could play a pivotal role in this volatile situation, as the Asian superpower is unlikely to support the outbreak of a new global conflict.
“China will play a role too, because China does not want a world war. China has not committed any serious act of aggression in a long time,” he explained.
