The United States believes that the plane carrying Wagner Group leaders is likely to have been shot down by a missile fired from Russian territory.
Details: According to two sources of the agency, the US is inclined to believe that the plane carrying the Wagner leaders was downed by a surface-to-air missile launched from Russian territory.
They emphasised that these are preliminary assumptions, and the situation continues to be analysed.
Reminder:
- On Wednesday evening, the Russian media and the Russian Federal Air Transport Agency reported that a small plane had crashed in Russia’s Tver Oblast. Yevgeny Prigozhin and his deputy Dmitry “Wagner” Utkin, whose call sign gave the group its name, were listed as having been on board.
- Paris said they would not be rushing to conclusions about the circumstances of the plane crash involving Prigozhin. Germany’s Foreign Minister also urged people not to draw hasty conclusions, and to ascertain that the Wagner leader is actually dead.
- The President of Lithuania believes that the security situation will not improve if Prigozhin’s death is confirmed.
- The Prime Minister of Poland, Mateusz Morawiecki, believes that after the death of Yevgeny Prigozhin, control over the Wagner Group will pass directly to the Kremlin, making it potentially more dangerous.
